Workshop Content

We offer 2 transition workshops, the first one is for parents who have a child moving to reception class and the second one is for parents who have a child moving to secondary school. Both sessions are suitable for children who have a EHC plan or not.

Both sessions follow have similar content in that we cover visiting schools, what to ask, what to look out for and how you can think about what would be right for your child. We explain how applications for special schools is different than mainstream applications and how the process is different if you have an EHC Plan. We then look at the actual application process and walk you through the timeframe. After that we move on to receiving the decision, what happens next and what to do if you don’t get our preferred choice.¬†

The session ends with some handy tips for preparing for the actual move.

We run these sessions in the Autumn only.

For the Year 6 Transition Workshop we welcome parents of year 5 & 6 pupils.

For the Early Years transition we suggest attending the 2019 workshop if your child is due to start reception class in September 2020.

About our workshops in general

Our sessions are always run in small, informal groups, this allows for parents to ask questions and receive answers there and then. We encourage conversation and parents who have attended workshops tell us this makes the sessions even more beneficial.

We always offer drinks and snacks and as the sessions are 2 1/2 hours we always have a short break in the middle too.

The content of all our workshops are legally accurate and up to date with Bolton SEND processes as they are written by Cheryl Wyatt from IAS who has current legal SEND training. Through our work as a parent carer forum we work closely with Bolton Council and the NHS to ensure that the information about processes and services is also accurate.

All attendees are given a handout to take home that covers the content of the sessions and legally based information.

This workshop is hosted by Cheryl Wyatt from IAS and Nan Cooper from BPC, both of whom are parents to teenagers with SEND.

We hold our workshops at The Bolton Hub which has car parking nearby, details of which can be found by clicking here
