Ideal for Year 5 and 6 parents, everything you need to know about the move to Secondary School.
Runs in September & May ONLY
Designed by Cheryl Wyatt from the Information & Advisory Service (IAS) Bolton, our workshop has been written to guide parents and carers through everything you need to know about making the move to Secondary School.
Our sessions are run in relatively small groups, this allows for parents to ask questions and receive answers there and then.
All attendees take home a handout which includes a very handy planner to help parents and carers through the decision making process.
This workshop is hosted by Cheryl Wyatt from IAS and Nan Cooper from BPC.
What does the workshop cover?
For the September Workshop…
First of all we look at the decision making process. How do you make the decision as to which school to apply for. We cover Open Evenings and school visits and cover the kinds of things to look out for and to ask.
The deadline for application is the end of October in Year 6, so we cover the application form and how to fill it out. We specifically cover what you should do here if a special school is your preferred route. We also discuss the differences for applications for those with EHC Plans and those who are on SEN Support (no plan.)
Parents and carers have to wait until the Spring to find out which school has been allocated. We cover how this is communication to you, and how it is different if a special school is your preferred route. We also touch on appealing the decision made.
Finally we open up the workshop to discuss the actual move and how you can work with your child to help them prepare for Year 7 in a brand new school!
We only run this workshop in September as Year 7 Open Evenings start towards the end of the month. We want parents of Year 6 children to be able to attend the session before visiting the open evenings if possible.
For the May Workshops
The May version of this workshop looks at the actual transition and is more suitable for Year 6 parents. We will ensure you know all the questions you need to have asked and are able to plan to support your child as they leave Primary school.
